What is Strength & Conditioning?

Strength and Conditioning is the physical and physiological development of athletes for elite sport performance. The role of the S&C coach is to bridge the gap between the theory of exercise science and the practical application of training, to help athletes become faster, stronger, more flexible and build muscular endurance so they perform better and remain injury free.

Strength and Conditioning is about more than just lifting weights – it encompasses the entire development of the athlete and what is needed to improve physical performance. This can include plyometrics, speed and agility, endurance and core stability, with technical mastery and strength training being just one piece of the jigsaw.

In the elite sports environment Strength and conditioning coaches work alongside a sports coach to assist them in designing specific programmes that will address the particular need of the athlete, team and sport. There are many ways a well constructed programme can add to the rehabilitation, speed & agility, endurance and strength of the athletes – periodized programming which targets both strengths and weaknesses of the individual athlete will produce the best possible performance improvements.

UK Strength & Conditioning Association

Within the UK, supported by UK Sport, the UKSCA since its launch in 2004 has become the independent voice that represents the profession. The organization aims to maintain the highest standards of practice and knowledge amongst its practitioners.
(Stu has recently attained his CSCS and is working towards his UKSCA Accreditation)

Session 1 – Consultation
The consultation is where we find out all about you. We’ll be taking your baseline measurements (height, weight, body fat %), discussing your goals, training & injury history, and sport (if applicable). In addition to this we will take you through a series of Dynamic Movement Screens that will allow us to identify any areas of inflexibility, muscular imbalances and inactivity, postural issues.
From all of this information we will be able to design the most suitable program for your current physical condition and goals.

Session 2 - Introduction to your program

By the time your second session comes around, your PDT coach will have prepared your specifically designed program to get you moving towards your goals. With PDT you don’t just get training sessions, you get a whole exercise program and the education and tools you need to achieve your athletic or fitness goals.
