Ouessant sheep are the world's smallest naturally occurring sheep. This rare breed comes from the small island of the same name, about 12 miles off the most westerly point of Brittany, France.
These charming little sheep make excellent pets they have an unusually friendly nature, and can be kept on a very small acreage. They are a primitive breed and very easy to keep, compared to most breeds of sheep. Their small size and endearing character makes them ideal for first-time keepers, smallholders etc.
The original breed of Ouessant sheep existed purely on the Isle of Ouessant until the start of the 20th century. Ouessant sheep were originally kept by the islanders for both their fleece and meat.
The little Ouessant sheep carries a thick fleece of long wool with a dense undercoat. They are an ideal addition to a spinners flock. As they are one of the most productive sheep breeds, in terms of the amount of fleece they produce for their size.
The original colours of the breed are black or white more rarely brown (caramel) occurs. As with most primitive sheep, lambing is usually easy and this hardy breed can live outside except in very wet or exceptionally stormy weather.
Ouessant sheep are still a relatively rare breed. It is important to go to a recognised breeder of registered stock. We are members of the Ouessant Sheep Society of Great Britain; all our sheep are registered and come with certificates.
