Sensei Matthew Newton - bio

I was first introduced to karate by my dad alongside my younger brother in 1995 at the age of 6. Since my first lesson I developed a passion for traditional and sport karate and later on coaching ever since. After 5 years of continuous training I received my black belt at aged 11 and received my 2nd and 3rd degree black belts at aged 17 and 21 all under the Shito-Ryu Shukokai Union respectively.

Even though I enjoy the challenges of traditional karate my true strength lies within sport karate. I have continuously competed in karate competitions around the country from an early age with great success. This spurred me on to keep on training hard and eventually this led to me being selected represent the north of England and later on my country in numerous competitions around the world such as Italy, Germany, France, Greece, Austria and Czech Republic earning myself numerous titles along the way. The highlight of my karate career so far came in 2013 when I was selected to compete in the 40th Gishinkan cup in japan where I was placed 3rd in the -67kgs category. As of now I am still an active competitor representing Sale dojo under head instructor sensei Ian swain 6th Dan.

In 2012, to further compliment my karate coaching skills and studies I decided to undertake a foundation degree in sports coaching at a local college. After completion I applied and was accepted onto the final year of a sports coaching degree at the university of central Lancashire. This has opened up my eyes to the important role a coach takes in the development of their athletes in the sporting environment and has taught me numerous skills that are needed by a coach in order to be successful.

Alongside karate, I also have successful experience in many other martial arts and hold ranks in taekwondo and Brazilian jiu jitsu and I have competed in numerous Thai boxing fights under team chongi.
