The park is predominantly wetland, with 3 main lakes providing refuge for a host of waterfowl, insect life and small mammals such as water voles.

There is a hide for bird watching and you are likely to see Tufted Duck, Mallard, Little Grebe, Great Crested Grebe, Coot, Moorhen, Ruddy Duck, Mute Swan and the Grey Heron as well as other less common species.

The lakes are home to Great Crested Newts and typical vegetation around the waters edge includes Water Forget-me-not, Watermint, Figwort, Gipsywort, Brooklime, Reedmace ( Bullrush) and great Willowherb.

There is plenty of space for the kids to run around, and to have picnics. The meadows are beautiful in the spring and summer, with lots of wild flowers and butterflies.

If you are looking for lunch there is the cafe, or the park is only a short walk from the town centre. If you are driving, why not come to us for lunch?
The cafe has some good displays about what to see at the park, and there are leaflets available on where you can and can't take your dog. (Areas in the park are classified as "dogs run free", "dogs on leads" and "no dogs", to allow wildlife some peace and quiet).

The visitor centre has indoor and outside seating and a good childrens play area. Summer opening hours are 10am-5pm every day except Monday, winter hours may vary. The cafe is also open most bank holidays during the summer.

There is an area of young woodland near the visitor centre and a specially created woodland walk through this. There is also a wildlife walk through the park, as well as many footpaths, some of which have a tarmac surface and are fully accessible.
