Maria Mallaband Care Group was founded on 1996 and is owned by Philip Burgan.

Philip is a pharmacist who became MD at 29, founding Medimart Chemists 5 years later which he grew to a chain of 38 pharmacies, selling them in 1995.

In 1996 he founded Maria Mallaband Care Group (MMCG), named after his grandmother, and grew it into one of the country’s biggest independent providers of care for the elderly.

Chris Ball, MMCG Managing Director, is an Oxford Graduate in Chemistry. Chris spent ten years working in corporate finance before spending seven years with a fast growth international language service business, firstly as Finance Director before taking the role of Managing Director. Chris joined Maria Mallaband Care Group as Finance Director in October 2008 and became Managing Director in January 2010.

In 2011 the group acquired 33 homes from Southern Cross and operates these as Countrywide Care Homes. Since the acquisition, the group has heavily invested in the renovation of the homes, updating of equipment and facilities and staff training to ensure that the Countrywide Homes uphold the excellent standards of facilities and care that the MMCG brand prides itself on.

Overall, the group now operates 72 care homes for the elderly.

Throughout the group, the training and development of staff is a key priority and the group makes significant investment in training resources for all staff and everyone is encouraged to make the most of all opportunities within the group.

There is continued promotion of the company's Mission Statement - 'To Be The Best Quality Care Provider in the United Kingdom' and, as a leader in the UK care home industry, we believe in providing the highest quality of care for all our residents.

Philip Burgan and the group are supporters of many charities: The Princes Trust, Barnardo’s, St Vincent de Paul Society and in particular “Make a Dream”, a cancer charity that Phil has helped raise over half a million pounds for children with terminal cancer during the past 6 years. In 2013 Philip set out on the challenge of a lifetime and drove a 1959 Volvo from Peking to Paris, travelling a total of 7,312 miles, raising over £82,000 for the Prince’s Trust. Over the years Philip has sponsored numerous events, as he believes passionately in promoting young British talent.
