ANNOUNCING THE INAUGURAL KIPLING FESTIVAL ROTTINGDEAN JULY 2014

Rudyard Kipling was a celebrated English novelist, short-story writer, and poet in the late 19th and early 20th centuries who was, at the time he lived in Rottingdean, the most popular author in the English speaking world. He is equally known for his works of fiction, including The Jungle Book; for his extraordinary canon of short stories, including The Man Who Would Be King, and for his poems, including If and Mandalay.

In July 2014 the village of Rottingdean will provide the setting for the inaugural Kipling Festival Rottingdean, a multi-generational celebration of Rudyard Kipling's life, work and legacy. This much-anticipated festival will also recreate the atmosphere of Rottingdean as it was in the Edwardian era and on the eve of WWI.

Taking place from July 12th to 20th the Kipling Festival Rottingdean will include:

- A new theatrical adaptation of the Just So Stories for family audiences
- Lectures and discussions about Kipling's family, life in Sussex and contribution to the world literary scene to be held at key historical venues in the village
- Kipling themed readings and storytelling in Edwardian costume by local actors and members of the Rottingdean Drama Society
- A new exhibition on Kipling at The Grange Museum, Rottingdean
- Guided tours of the award-winning Kipling Gardens and Rottingdean Village
- Inspired by Kipling, a creative project for local artists and youngsters who will have their art work displayed at The Grange Art Gallery.
- Re-enactments of Kipling Youth Club activities in which he had teens taught the skills of Morse Code, semaphore and marksmanship
- Personal appearance from local historian Geoff Hutchinson as Kipling Himself
- A Jungle Book themed picnic and costume party for younger children
- A programme of Edwardian childrens games on the Green.
- An Edwardian Tea Dance
- A vintage themed village fair on Rottingdean Village Green selling a range of quality products for the whole family
