Sandplay therapy is a method of play therapy that is based on Psychologist Carl Jung’s concept that the psyche has an autonomous disposition to heal itself. Sandplay acts to facilitate this healing process by helping to create new neural pathways in the brain, thus encouraging new behaviour. Sandplay Therapy makes use of a vast array of toys and figures that represent many aspects of everyday life, so that past experiences, present worries or simply things that we may not have the words to express may be represented in a free and protected space. Sandplay is an excellent therapy for children because in many cases the child’s brain development is not sufficient to enable them to talk about “what is wrong,” or to analyze his or her worries. It is the non-verbal aspect of Sandplay that allows them to ‘speak’ through symbolic work, the natural language of their inner worlds.
