Hackness probably is, and its residents say it definitely is, the most beautiful village in this part of the country. Outwardly the village has not changed over the years. It nestles under the brow of hills forming the Derwent valley.

Hackness has always been small with a population under 200 during the past 30 years that includes outlying farms. Small as it is, Hackness is the hub for a number of small hamlets nearby.
The local church can trace its own story back to 680A.D. In that year the Abbess Hilda of Whitby founded a monastery at the side of the lake as a retreat for the monks and nuns from Whitby. The present church was started in 1050A.D. and the chancel belongs to that period. The vestry was built in 1625, and the church was restored in 1620 and 1870.

Hackness Grange Country House Hotel was built in 1822. The property was enlarged in 1890, then to be occupied by the second Lord Derwent and subsequently by the Earl of Listowell.

For modern city dwellers this 19th century country house is
truly the near-perfect hideout. It is set in magnificent grounds. Some 11 acres of beautiful parkland, including the banks of the River Derwent, are among the feasts to be enjoyed.
Nestling in the verdant scenery of the Forge Valley, in the spectacular national part, Hackness Grange is only six miles from the east coast.

There are 31 individually presented rooms, all being en suite. The superb restaurant overlooks the lake – with its island in the middle – and provides some of the finest traditional Yorkshire cooking.

For those who wish to tour and explore the splendor of the North York Moors, or travel along the spectacular east coast, Hackness Grange Hotel is the perfect base.

With a fines history as a hotel, Hackness Grange Hotel has many stories to tell and photographs to share.......
