Foreign Languages In Context (FLIC) is a teaching and learning method based on the well-established notion according to which kinaesthetic learning is far more effective than traditional rote learning and regurgitating of acquired knowledge. Whilst memorizing vocabulary, phrases and grammar rules remains one way to lead to a level where one may feel confident to state “I can speak French,” this is only likely to occur for a specific type of learner. The next stumbling block being the challenge of communicating with native speakers in a foreign country - in context. Such traditional learners, however competent in class, often find themselves confronted to the stark reality that knowing it all does not make communication easier. It is a start and provided the learner embraces this new challenge, then their confidence should not be knocked to the point of giving up. But how many would-be Francophiles could attest to experiencing this? Far more often we hear that learners enjoyed doing French, but simply found it to hard to carry on - stumbling at the context hurdle.
Why is it so hard? Because only theory has been tackled. At best, some practice has been acquired through role-play, but again, this is a learning medium that may suit some learners better than others…

FLIC addresses this issue from the onset: Learners are encouraged to do something in the target language, rather than merely talk. Theories only get an airing as and when necessary to achieve a deeper understanding of the language used in a given activity. There will be an opportunity to repeat and practice the language in use, in order to gain confidence, not only in the field of pronunciation, but also in the field of fluency - and this is usually the most crucial element.

Confidence to let the words, phrases and sentences flow is what makes the difference between an able learner and an aspiring one.

So, to recap, each client’s natural inclinations and preferences need to be assessed prior to engaging in a successful and fulfilling foreign language course. FLIC starts with a simple quiz aimed at finding out how confident they already are in the target language and what their usual spheres of interest are. The tutor will then devise a programme, using the data collected, then evaluate its impact and adapt it, after each session.
