Fairlawn Primary School is a brand new 420 place school in the heart of Montpelier, Bristol’s first suburb. It began life in 1898 as Fairfield Secondary and Higher Grade School for boys and girls and was designed by William Larkin Bernard, the Bristol School Board architect. The innovative Fairfield Higher Grade school was founded for 180 pupils to stay on at school until the age of sixteen or seventeen.
Notable pupils during those early decades include: Hollywood actor Cary Grant (aka Archie Leach), Sir Archibold Russell, Deputy to the french designer of the Concorde and Len Corbett, one of Bristol Rugby Club’s finest players. Later categorised as a Grammar School, a Comprehensive & then a High School. By the 21st century the site had become too cramped and the school finally closed in 2006 and relocated to a new purpose built building on Stottbury Rd nearby.
