Pipefitter: What is the work like?

A pipefitter is a tradesman who positions, assembles, fabricates, maintains and repairs piping systems which may carry water, steam, chemicals or fuel used in heating, cooling, lubricating and other processes. Typical industrial process pipe operates under high pressure, which requires metals such as carbon steel and many different alloys, and where connections and joints are usually made by welding.

This type of work differs from that of a plumber who normally concentrates on pipework carrying water, gas and sewage from commercial and residential properties and which operates at much lower pressures. Work of this kind typically involves materials such as copper, plastics and galvanised steel and where joints are glued, soldered or threaded.

Your main duties would include:

Reading and interpreting drawings and specifications to determine the type of pipe and tools to use
Make detailed sketches for pipe and equipment fabrication and installation where necessary
Measure, cut, thread, groove, bend, assemble and install metal valves and fittings; although other materials may be used
Join pipe sections and related equipment by welding, brazing, soldering and threading
Use testing equipment to check systems and detect leaks
As well as installing new pipework, fitters also work on existing plant such as is found in oil refineries, chemical and pharmaceutical plants and power stations etc.. They will work both indoors and outdoors, on physically demanding tasks that often require working at heights and lifting heavy equipment. It is normal to work using power tools, sometimes on scaffolding, both inside and outside tall buildings and processing plants, and overtime working is often necessary to complete projects to suit production routines.

Pipefitter: What general skills and interests do you need?

To be a pipefitter, you would need:

Good practical ability, to measure, cut, thread, groove, bend, assemble and join pipes, valves and fittings
Mechanical aptitude with physical strength and dexterity
Ability to read and interpret drawings
Ability to make detailed sketches for pipe and equipment fabrication and installation
The ability to work well as part of a team and alone if necessary
The ability to work to a high standard of accuracy
The nature of this work means that you would be travelling from site to site, perhaps living away from home for long periods, and a driving licence may
