Coast – Our Newest Fish Restaurant

A few months ago I wrote the story about what had happened to Tatties in Trinity street. Finally after months of waiting whilst the place was gutted, refurbished and had a fresh lick of paint, it re-opened.

I couldn’t wait to see the end result of our newest fish restaurant Coast. I didn’t have to guess what it was going to look like inside as on all my tours, we had a peek through the door. I couldn’t wait to get there as I was very keen to have a look at the menu. The question was; ‘what would the end result be like?’

Let’s start with the decor of Coast. It’s simple and clean. Not a fancy restaurant, but a café style restaurant where you can expect ‘a good plate of food’. Saying that, the take away counter is quite swanky!

The team behind Coast has done months of research to find the best fish and chips in the country, but it’s not just fish and chips they serve here. Their menu consists of a fantastic array of sea food inspired dishes, but there is a lot of choice for the carnivore and vegetarian too. I was glad to see, that the gluten free customer has been catered for too.

I opted for the fish and chips with mussy peas as the basics have to be right. And it was! It’s actually really unfair to call it a fish and chips restaurant as it is so much more! Not a surprise with a head chef, who has fish running through his veins. His father is one of the biggest fish mongers in France. He probably didn’t have milk at birth, but fish. And it shows…

When you browse the menu of Coast, you wonder if you’re in the UK. Of course the menu has the traditional fish dishes you would expect in a fish restaurant in the UK, but the others have definitely a French touch. There are lots of nice prawns to peel, lobster, mussels and oysters, but also cured herring, salmon confit, delicious salads and sharing platters. For the carnivores there are good steaks, surf & turf and a burger. The vegetarian crowd hasn’t been forgotten too. You can expect a vegetable burger, lasagne or delicious home made cheese & onion cakes.

When I took my seat in front of the window, my neighbour suggested I should have the seafood tagliatelle. If it wasn’t for my research for a good fish and chips in the centre of town I would have tried it. The dish looked fabulous. Initially I thought it was a mélange of fish as the only thing I could see was seafood and razor clams. I can’t wait to try it next time.

Correction; next time will be breakfast at Coast as their breakfast menu is amazing. You might struggle to make a choice as there are 14 different selections to choose from. From the traditional full English breakfast to vegetarian to a local Cambridge sausage sandwich, a vegetarian sandwich to their signature breakfast, a Scottish breakfast, eggs Benedict, various omelets and two choices of continental breakfast. My eye caught the unusual options though…. smoked haddock soufflé, seafood croissant and a salmon roll made from puff pastry.

You don’t have to guess where you can find me this morning… Of course all because of research. It’s a hard life!
