CHIPPINDALE PLANT LTD HISTORY

1949

Company formed by Wilfred Chippindale with £100 working from home selling concrete mixers and scaffolding

1950

Rented first depot at Barrack Street Leeds 7. Set on first fitter Jack Ellis and bought first new van a 2 cylinder Jowett. Took on Wickham and Alcon Pump Agency

1953

Brian Chippindale joined having done an engineering course at Wickham Engineering and 2 Years National Service. Took on Multico Woodmaking Machinery

1955

Gordon Chippindale joined having done and engineering course at Alcon Pumps and 2 Years National Service. Sold our first Thwaites Dumper and Bristol Compressor. Hired first piece of plant which was a Thwaites Dumper

1956

Bought our first premises at St Ann's Works Kirkstall Leeds 5. Took on Bristol Crawler Tractors and sold 32 Units in the first 12 months.

1959

Started selling Green Rollers

1960

Both the Hire and Sales rapidly increased in the next few years the fleet comprising of mixers, dumpers, and pumps up to 6". Hoists and vibrating rollers

1965

Moved to Butterbowl Works Leeds 12 which is still the main head office.

1967

Opened first Depot in Doncaster, which always struggled and was a good lesson for the future. Closed two years later. The hire fleet still rapidly expanded over the next few years

1972

Started new Depot in Keighley. All vans and trucks and cars had radiotelephones installed. Only the second hire company in Yorkshire.

1978

Sold our first Mini Excavator

1982

Company went computerized which was on of the first in Yorkshire

1983

Nigel Chippindale joined the company after serving an apprenticship as a motor vehicle mechanic and gaining a HND in Business Management

1984

Company name changed to Chippindale Plant Ltd

1985

Wilfred Chippindale the founder of the company died

1986

Offered Pel-Job Excavators and became the main distributor for Yorkshire. Pel-Job was later taken over by VOLVO who improved the range substantially

1989

Gordon Chippindale died, his son Peter joined the company having done an engineering degree at Sheffield and working in Libya

1998

Brian Chippindale retired

1999

Appointed Bomag and Atlas Copco distributors, which increased sales dramatically. 50 Years in business was celebrated at the Great Yorkshire Show

2002

Mechplant, based at York, was purchased together with their Wakefield Depot.

2003

Catterick Depot opened

2004

Purchased Huddersfield Hire Centre

2006

Wakefield Depot relocated to Sheffield

2009

60 Years in business

2011

Purchased Newcastle branch of Ambrose Hire
