1979-The Beginning
A community service initiative turns into a Nursing Home Project.... After 6 years of regular visits to the aged and aged sick in the various Nursing Homes, the volunteers decided that it was time to consolidate their community work.
1986-No.19 Kee Ann Road
With $25,000 of their pooled savings, the volunteers acquired the commercial 'Sunshine Nursing Home'. The Volunteer Management decided that they would operate as a non-profit organisation with the objective of providing nursing care and shelter for the sick, aged sick and handicapped from the lower socio-economic sector.
1st January 1989-SWAMI Home, reborn
Sunshine Welfare Action Mission assumed the management of the Home and the acronym SWAMI was used. This excitement was short-lived as the Housing and Development Board acquired Kee Ann Road.
5th October 1989-No.52 Bah Tan Road
What was old and dilapidated showed the potential and the management set out to work immediately. A Building Fund Committee was set up and they raised $960,000.00 to pay for the extensive renovation. The Institution of a Public Character (IPC) status was accorded enabling donations to be tax exempt.
Today @ No. 5 Sembawang Walk
The hard work was short-lived with the development of Sembawang New Town. However, this time, SWAMI Home was allocated a 0.6 ha site. The Ministry of Health funded 82% of the building cost.
