Singapore which is also known as the Republic of Singapore is a small country, which is the size of a small island and is situated on the tip of the Malayan peninsula. It is situated in the south eastern part of Asia. The country has about sixty three small islands.

The country has number of important places, like the sub urban town of Sengkang. It is situated in the north eastern part of the country. This upcoming place is under the planning area of the Urban Redevelopment Authority, which covers both the new town and the rural part of the region.

Like all other place of the country it is also experiences a Tropical Rainforest type climate. The name Sengkang means Prosperous Harbour according to the Chinese language and the name was actually derived from the small road, which was named Lorong Sengkang. In the earlier days it was known by the name of Kangkar, which meant “foot of the port” due to the location of a fishing port in the nearby area. In the old days people mainly practiced agriculture and rubber and pepper were the major products. Fishing also played an important role in the livelihood of the people. There were also farms that kept domesticated animals like pigs. It was mainly a rural outcrop with only a housing estate with some residential complex that gave bit of an urban feel. Though it was demolished later to make way for new developments.

The new town at the Sengkang is connected to the downtown areas by the trains on the North East MRT Line, which stopped at the Sengkang MRT Station. Then there is also the Sengkang LRT Line that has intersected the line of the MRT at the Sengkang Station, thus providing the local people good connectivity to the various parts of the town and also other parts of the island.

This new town of Sengkang has good amenities as compared to the old town. This new place has schools both of primary and secondary level and a public library too. The place now has good shopping malls and the Compass Point Shopping Centre close to the station and the bus interchange is a popular one, due to its great position and connectivity it is the place where the locals hang out to have a good time. The other shopping Malls are the Rivervale Mall, Rivervale Plaza, Fernnvale Point and the Kopitiam Square; some of them even have “Wet markets”. The new town even has a Policlinic and also Community Centers. There is also a upcoming Cineplex at a mall in the town which is scheduled to be finished by the end of this year.

The government is also planning to construct a brand new General Hospital, which is going to provide medical facilities to the locals along with the all people of North Eastern Singapore. This brand new hospital will be strategically so that it is well connected and along with this there will also be a Community Hospital, which will be providing rehabilitative services along with sub-acute care to the patients.
