Select Books is one of the oldest independent book companies in the region. Long known as a gathering place for intellectuals and artists in Asia and around the world, Select Books has been involved in the retailing, distribution and publishing of important works in Southeast Asian history, including noted works by authors such as Pramoedya Ananta Toer, Mochtar Lubis, Goh Poh Seng, William Lim, Frankie Sionil Jose and Sulak Sivaraksa.

After 36 years at Tanglin Shopping Centre, Select Books relocated its retail shop to 51 Armenian Street (a gazetted national monument) in April 2012. This building has historical significance as the location of Sun Yat Sen's United Chinese Library from 1911 to 1987, and sits in an area with a rich intellectual and cultural heritage.

With a larger space and an in-store cafe, Select Books plans to hold regular book-related events at the new premises to engage a younger generation of readers across the region.
