ABOUT LAW IV

Each year, the graduating class of the NUS Faculty of Law puts up a musical to raise funds for charity. This annual production, known as Law IV, is a tradition that has lasted over two decades. It allows the final-year students to showcase their talents and give back to society at the same time. It is also hoped that Law IV will nurture a spirit of giving that will continue to guide members of the graduating class as they establish their careers.

In line with the national drive to honour the pioneer generation, Law IV 2015 sets out to benefit the elderly. Our beneficiary, The Society for the Aged Sick, provides care and shelter for senior citizens suffering from ill health, especially those with low income or with no family to depend on.

The LAW IV 2015 Production Team hopes to raise awareness for the work done at the Society for the Aged Sick to garner greater support for its cause – either in the form of donations or personal volunteerism. In addition, all funds raised - donations and proceeds from ticket and merchandise sales - will go to the Society for the Aged Sick.

THE MUSICAL

As Singapore celebrates 50 years of independence, Law IV 2015 is a throwback to the 1960s. The musical is inspired by the 1966 student protests that took place On The Upper Quad at the Bukit Timah Campus.

Student leaders objected to the Suitability Certificate requirement for university admission, which was intended to keep out subversive elements in the tertiary institutions, calling it a breach of academic freedom and university autonomy.

A boy eager to enter into university life is prevented from realising his dreams due to his family history. His elder sister, the sole breadwinner, is traumatised by her family’s past into a pragmatic resignation to fate. She meets a bright university student who is brimming with youthful idealism, but eventually learns what it really means to stand up for his beliefs.
