New Opera Singapore Ltd. 3.18

Opera is drama set to music, an art form that combines all aspects of the arts and culture. It explores a limitless range of human emotions and tells stories through music, from intrigue to triumph, from tragedy to comedy. Yet it does not have a large following in Singapore because it is often perceived as an art form that is removed from and inaccessible to the masses. As Singapore has moved into the ranks of the developed world, the awareness of the arts, especially music, amongst the Singaporean population has increased exponentially. More young people have the access to music education and have found a passion Western music, especially vocal music. Aspiring musicians who found their calling in the performance arts have found an eager audience both among local and expatriate populations.

Yet there is a dearth of platforms for singers, musicians and audiences to engage in meaningful performance dialogue, in effect isolating much of the local population from accessing the high quality of music that Singaporeans are capable of producing. New Opera Singapore has taken it upon itself to become the instrument of change in the local Opera scene. Music and opera in particular have a mass appeal that very few other art forms can stake a claim to and we hope to be able to share this experience with audiences from all walks of life. Furthermore, we want to be a company that will take advantage of the plethora of outstanding Singaporean singers, musicians and artists in order to foster a collaborative environment. For our debut production, we would like to present the Singapore premier of L’elisir d’amore (The Elixir of Love), a beloved operatic work composed by the Italian composer Gaetano Donizetti.
