HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

1. Marsiling Primary School (MPS) was established in 1958 as Marsiling School. It was one of the oldest schools in the Marsiling estate.
2. The school was originally located along Marsiling Avenue, off Lorong Chikar. It was relocated to its current premise along Woodlands Centre Road in June 1986 and renamed Marsiling Primary School. MPS will be undergoing PERI upgrading for its Indoor Sports Hall (ISH) and enhanced learning facilities, scheduled for completion by August 2016.

VISION, MISSION, MOTTO & VALUES

3. To provide students a holistic education so as to prepare them to meet future challenges, the School Strategic Plan for 2014 to 2018 is captured in the diagrammatic form of a house in which its foundation is anchored on its philosophy and mission. The school has identified 4 strategic areas of focus vis-à-vis (1) an Innovative and Rigorous curriculum to deliver students’ academic success, (2) Values-based Holistic Development of students through CCE, sports and aesthetics, (3) Developing Staff capacity and competency and (4) Building strong-school-home partnership.

4. The school values are encapsulated in the acronym ‘R²IC²E’ (Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Commitment, Care and Esprit de Corps). Like a staple diet, R²IC²E is infused into both the formal and informal curriculum of the school.

5. The school motto ‘Ilmu Suluh Hidup’ (translated to mean “Knowledge lights up our Lives”), as reflected in the school crest, continues to be of relevance today. The white represents virtue and good character, while the blue is symbolic of a peaceful and harmonious environment. The four interlocking rings represent our closely-knit multi-racial school population working in harmony. The stalk of padi is symbolic of hard work and effort required for success. The star reflects the belief we have that every student can achieve and education (symbolized by the pen), will blaze the way (as shown by the torch) for our students.

SPECIAL PROGRAMMES AND NEW & INNOVATIVE INITIATIVES

6. In line with PERI initiatives, the school provides students with a student- centric holistic education that is balanced, progressive and rigorous. To prepare students to be future ready to fulfil their responsibilities to both family and nation, the school seeks to create possibilities and enhance the opportunities for students to develop the 21st century competencies and prepare them for life. This involves enhancing the curriculum, enriching their character and realising their potential. School-based curriculum innovation is the key to achieving the desired outcomes of “every student, engaged learner and every teacher, a caring educator.”

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT & VALUES EDUCATION

7. In MPS, we share a common belief in nurturing responsible learners and compassionate leaders who can learn, lead and serve. We strive to instil in every Marsilian our core values of R²IC²E (Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Commitment, Care and Esprit de Corps) and nurture responsible active citizenship through service leadership. This is espoused in our Citizenship and Character Education or CCE’s vision of ‘Every Marsilian a Service Leader and Green Citizen’.

8. To foster a student-centric, values-driven learning environment, CCE in Marsiling Primary is anchored on two core programmes – Values in Action (VIA) and student leadership vis-à-vis Green Citizenship & LEAD to SERVE respectively. VIA is practised through our Green Citizenship programme which engages students in initiating collective actions among peers in doing simple acts of taking care of the school and environment. The school’s student leadership programme “LEAD to Serve@MPS” focuses on developing the individual capacity to lead and influence others with respect, responsibility, care and appreciation.

FUTURE DIRECTIONS & CONCLUSION

9. The school believes that developing the 21st century competencies and the focus on meaningful student engagement will enhance our students’ cognitive and affective development, and eventual success in life. The school will continue to inculcate the right values in our students and equip them with knowledge and skills so as to prepare them to face the challenges of the future. Through comprehensive academic and co-curricular programmes, anchored on student centric and values-driven learning, the school hopes to nurture the students to achieve their potential. At the end of their 6 years in MPS, we want to see our students grow to become Responsible Learners and Compassionate Leaders ready to serve community and nation as active young citizens.
