100 years+ and kicking!

A furniture store first opened its doors on our site in the historic Östermalm neighbourhood of Stockholm in 1912. In the 1950s and ‘60s, renamed Nordiska Galleriet – or Nordic Gallery – the store’s reputation arose with modernism under the management of Carl-Magnus Heigard.

A legendary figure in the design world, Carl-Magnus (the great-nephew of the company’s founder), believed that beautiful objects enhanced each other. He dreamt up a store concept like no other – he decided that Nordiska Galleriet must be a furniture store that felt more like an exhibition in a gallery, curating the very best of modern design.

Famous for his impeccable taste and curatorial genius, Carl-Magnus gathered together the best international design in his Stockholm store. He travelled to Milan, Copenhagen and Basel, bringing back masterpieces by Børge Mogensen, Arne Jacobsen, Verner Panton and Charles and Ray Eames – all virtually unheard of at the time in Sweden. His passion for mid-century Italian furniture led to the landmark exhibition ‘Viva l’Italia’ in 1968, featuring Gio Ponti where B&B and Cassina was introduced to the Scandinavian market.

Today, at Nordiska Galleriet we continue to chase his dream of ‘more than a store’. Our customers – many we have come to know as friends over the years – travel to us from around the world. Our heritage in modernism remains central to what we do, curating the best of 21st century design and contemporary furniture, art, accessories and vintage – all artfully displayed in our store.
