About Lotshuset and Järnäsklubb

The Pilot Station in Järnäsklubb officially established 1725 and was the first in the county of Västerbotten. The current building was raised 1861 in the island of Storbådan for the pilots to be closer to the arriving ships. With the use of motor driven boats the pilots could get around quicker and the need for a station in Stobådan disappeared. The Station was then moved (!) to Järnäsklubb 1904 where it still stands.

"Klubb" means "out of the sea projecting headland" which is the best way to describe Järnäsklubb. Järnäsklubb, was earlier said to be part of Järnäs, one of the older villages in Nordmaling, here lived and worked archipelago farmers and fishermen who have always had their own boats and involved in trade with among others Finland.

The earliest evidence suggesting that the area has been inhabited long is Järnäsbrevet from 1413, this document shows that grandfathered limits of the village existed as early as the 1400s.

The village's history is preserved in books and through storytelling which is passed on via the local families many of whom lived in areas for many years.

Today there are about 70 people living in the village. The population increases dramatically every summer when the cottage owners arrive.

The village is, despite its size, very much a living village. Besides Lotshuset, there is also a café in the harbour serving "fika" and light meals. As of the summer 2014 Järnäsklubb also boast its own art gallery, Konsthall Norra Kvarken.

Parts of Järnäsklubb is now part of the marine nature reserve being formed in the sea area around Örefjärden, Snöan Archipelago and peninsula of Järnäs. The area belongs to the county's finest coastal environments and includes an exciting mix of high natural, cultural and historical values and values for outdoor recreation.
