India’s diplomatic presence in Saudi Arabia goes back to pre-independence period when India had a Vice Consul in the British Embassy in Jeddah to look after Indian pilgrims who came to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for Haj. Independent India’s diplomatic mission was set up in Jeddah in 1948, initially as a Consulate, then as a Consulate General, a Legation, and in 1957 as a full fledged Embassy. In those days, diplomatic Missions were confined to Jeddah where the Foreign Office was located while the King and the other Ministries were located in the capital city of Riyadh. In the early 1980s, the Saudi Government directed diplomatic Missions to shift to Riyadh. The Indian Embassy moved to Riyadh in 1985 and since then Consulate General began functioning in Jeddah.

The Consulate General of India, Jeddah, has jurisdiction over the Western and South-Western regions of the Kingdom touching the Jordon’s border at the one end and to Yemen’s border on the other, which also includes major cities like Jeddah, Taif, Al-Baha, Khamis Mushayat/Abha, Yanbu, Madinah, Tabuk, Jijan, Najran and Bisha.
