A 15 kms de Porches, a cidade de Cilpes (Silves) com o seu imponente castelo foi palco da milenar história de Portugal, de conquistas e descobertas.
No séc. XVI, o rei D.João III manda erguer o forte no local onde se situa a Capela da Senhora da Rocha. O objectivo era defender a zona dos ataques dos piratas mouros.
No inicio do séc. XIX o local já se encontrava bastante degradado devido à forte erosão marítima e ao terramoto de 1755.
No séc.XX, em 1963, o forte e a capela foram classificados como Imóvel de Interesse Público tendo sofrido obras de restauro e consolidação.
Este local oferece uma vista panorâmica única e representa a história e cultura do Algarve.

Porches enchants for keeping its roots with more than two thousand years, as well as presenting some of the best attractions of the modern Algarve.
Its origins date back to the Roman Empire. Located between Ossonoba (Faro) and Lacobriga (Lagos), this primitive village was situated near the actual village of Porches with a prime location on the cliffs offering a field of view essential in times of military invasions. Fifteen kms from Porches, the city of Cilpes (Silves) with its impressive castle was a stage of the millenary history of Portugal of conquests and discoveries. In the sixteenth century, King João III orders the construction of a military fort in the place where the Chapel of Senhora da Rocha is situated. The purpose was to defend the area from attacks by Moorish pirates. At the beginning of the nineteenth century this place was already severely degraded due to strong maritime erosion and the 1755 earthquake.
In 1963 the military fort and chapel were classified as a Public Interest and were restored. This location offers a unique panoramic view and represents the history and culture of the Algarve. Handicrafts and wine production are secular in Porches and Lagoa, representing the excellence of the traditions and habits of the Algarve.
