Mateus Estate 2.69

Mateus is the heart of an expansive landholding estate founded in the 12th century in Northern Portugal. The estate as it is today, dates from the early 18th century, built on the sight of its original foundations. Casa de Mateus became the management locus for these estates, deeply rooted in Portugal’s winemaking traditions where wines have been produced since the 16th century. Portugal was the first country to designate protected wine regions, namely the Douro Valley by Marques de Pombal in 1756 where Casa de Mateus operates vineyards to this day.

In the 18th century wines produced at Casa de Mateus first crossed the Atlantic Ocean to Brazil. Dom Luis António de Sousa Botelho Mourão, 4th Morgado of Mateus, Governor and Captain General of São Paulo served these wines to his honoured guests.
