Saint Dominic Savio - An Inspirational Figure For The Dominic Savio Club/Choir and All The Children All Around The World

Dominic Savio (April 2, 1842 – March 9, 1857) was an Italian adolescent student of Saint John Bosco. He was studying to be a priest when he became ill and died at the age of 14, possibly from pleurisy. Dominic Savio recognized God’s calling and continued to follow until God saw his love and devotion that He called him to His home. His teacher, John Bosco, had very high regard for Savio and wrote a biography of his young student, "The Life of Dominic Savio". This volume along with other accounts of him, were critical factors in his cause for sainthood. Despite the fact that many people considered him to have died at too young an age – 14 – to be considered for sainthood, he was considered eligible for such singular honour on the basis of his having displayed "heroic virtue" in his everyday life. Savio was canonised a saint on June 12, 1954 by Pope Pius XII, making him the youngest non-martyr to be canonised in the Catholic Church.

An Introductory of Saint Dominic Savio Club/Choir

Just like Saint Dominic Savio and all the other Saints, The Dominic Savio Club/Choir recognized God’s calling and began their journey to serve God in 1968 as a simple bible class for the children of Our Lady of Fatima Parish after the Sunday morning Mass. Finding a good response from the church and the community it evolved into a proper club in 1970 for school-going children to improve their religious education, having a constitution drawn up by Barney John and approved and signed by Reverand Father Kieran Smith, then Parish Priest, and countersigned by Jean Rodrigues and Barney. After a year or so Allan Goveas joined them followed by George Furtado.

Many children from Our Lady of Fatima took off on the wings of a song and a prayer countless hours of practice and the addition of a key-boardist, guitarist, basist and a drummer. It started with the children of the club and was known as The Dominic Savio Choir or The Junior Choir. Allan and the team collected the children and patiently taught them the fundamentals; how to read the words, hum the tunes, and then to sing together with each other and the accompanying music, be it a single guitar, or a combo of guitar, drums and key-board. And the annual pageants, the Passion Plays, the Christmas Story were all the brain-sparks and tireless work of Allan Goveas which is still being carried out.

The Dominic Savio Choir has organized countless charitable concerts and trips in order to serve the aged homes and the special children (disabled) by their talented vocals and by their efforts in serving them with food, happiness and love.
