Institute of Communication Studies which took its roots in Allama Iqbal Campus (Old Campus) of Punjab University as “Department of Journalism” has nurtured into a vast tree of communication now, and developed as the “Institute of Communication Studies”. It has been the centre of attention for hundreds of students and teachers of communication in South Asia since 1941.
It was started from a single room, at the old campus in 1941, under the chairmanship of Pirthvi Paul Singh. In the beginning six-month certificate course was on track in Law College Old Campus. After one year on 1st October 1942 this course has been upgraded to nine-month diploma program. Master’s program was started in 1960s. Until 90s, annual system of studies was being offered with nine subjects and one Research Thesis but three different specializations have been offered so as to cope up with the contemporary needs of media.
Keeping in view the popularity and growth of the Journalism department, it was shifted to Quaid-e-Azam campus in Philosophy Department in 1965, after one year it was shifted on the top floor of the Institute of Education and Research in 1966. It was renamed in 1985 from Journalism department to Department of Mass Communication, with elements of Radio and TV Journalism included in it. Later on, it was moved to its current premises with a small building, which was later on extended keeping in view of department requirements. This “Department of Mass Communication” was shifted from old campus to new campus at the bank of Lahore Canal in 1989 which explores the new horizons and advance technologies. After words the department was upgraded on February 24th, 2006 as the “Institute of Communication Studies”. About 1200 students are currently enrolled in the Institute.
