Cotton Research Institute (CRI), Rahim Yar Khan is a prestigious research institute of Southern Punjab, Pakistan. It was established in 1978-79 and works under the Ayub Agriculture Research Institute, Faisalabad, which is under the administrative control of Govt. of the Punjab. The basic purpose of Cotton Research Institute, Rahim Yar Khan is to boost up cotton production in the region though research and development.
As Pakistan is agriculture based country and 70% of its employment directly generates through agriculture. Similarly, cotton is a cash crop of Pakistan. It contributes approximately 5% to the GDP. It provides fiber, food and shelter. It is also a very good source of energy. World population is increasing very rapidly and in the current scenario where there is limited arable resources\land and finite resources of water we have to enhance our productivity, which is only possible through research and development.
Dr. Abid Mahmood is the Director of CRI, Rahim Yar Khan who resides at Ayub Agricultural Research Institute, Faisalabad. Under the dynamic leadership of Dr. Abid Mahmood this Institute is flourishing day and night. Mr. Muhammad Yasin, Cotton Botanist is holding the responsibilities of In charge CRI, Rahim Yar Khan, due to his efforts, dedication and commitment, CRI is considered as one of the finest research institute of Punjab, Pakistan.
