Balochistan province covers a large area in the south west of Pakistan. It is sparsely populated land bordering Afghanistan and Iran. To the south lies one of the most inhospitable desert, the Mekran, and Arabian Sea. Balochistan is geographically the largest province of the country holding 347,190 Sq Km area. The population density is very low due to the mountainous terrain and scarcity of water. Groundwater is undoubtedly the most essential, precious and rare resource of the Balochistan Province. Average rainfall in province is 6 to 7 inches per annum. On account of low rainfall and insufficient surface flow, the entire province is dependent on ground water. Balochistan province generates total surface flood flows of 10.79, 3.25 and 25.23 billion m3 during average, dry and wet years respectively. This indicates an increase of 134% during wet years whereas decrease of 70% during dry years. It, therefore, becomes evident that harnessing of flood flows for, inter- alia, direct irrigation, drinking and recharge purposes offer great potential. Realizing it, the Government of Balochistan/ Pakistan has embarked upon a comprehensive programme of harnessing flood flows through construction of small dams. The Government of Pakistan is sponsoring construction of 100 dams in Balochistan and the Project has been accommodated in the Federal PSDP 2007-08. The project has been prioritized and divided into 5 packages. Federal Government reflected the project Construction of 100 Dams in Balochistan (Package-I, 20 Dams), amounting to Rs. 2154.080 million in Federal PSDP 2007-08. The project was successfully launched in June 2009. Package-I (20 Dams) is at advanced stage of completion and will hopefully be completed in next financial year till December 2014. The Package-II, for construction of 26 dams in Balochistan out of 100 dams is at an advance stage of implementation and the work is in progress with full swing. 100 Dams in Balochistan - All rights reserved.A Creative Corner Website
