Super Typhoon “Yolanda” or internationally known as “Haiyan” struck and laid waste & destruction to Central Philippines namely in Region VIII. We can clearly see that houses and structures were no match against strong and destructive winds. Here in Ormoc City we had witnessed complete and utter destruction. We could not imagine and could not believe such winds could destroyed concrete structures and houses. Various people were homeless and businesses hampered. As we investigate the primary problems we found out that reasons behind such destruction aside from bad workmanship or had it constructed in the wrong way, were merely caused also by sub-standard materials that were used. Aside from very relatively small sizes of reinforced bars that were used, the CONCRETE HOLLOW BLOCKS or CINDER BLOCKS (CHB) that were being utilized were also one of the real culprits. The commercially available CHB were somewhat like a 90% Sand and 10% Cement, just to manufacture more beyond what is safe to make and in order to gain more profit. You can testify for yourself, as you can see the CHB nowadays if you happen to see one, you can crumple or destroy a concrete block with your bare hands.

That is not what we want in our community, a very life threatening structures due sub-standard construction materials. Various architects and engineers of WCA Architects, as well as other architectural and engineering experts of the locality, decided to lend a hand and decided to help the community in uplifting the quality of the local construction industry.
