Delectably Budget Friendly Superbatchoy

Authentic is when you have the original and claim its being genuine. A food, particularly La Paz Batchoy is unmistakably authentic when cooked and served in Iloilo. But can it be authentic in Manila?

Driven by their desire to bring the authentic taste to Manila, Josh Jaena and his wife Paulette decided to make their own La Paz Batchoy right in the heart of Pasay City.

Thus, Superbatchoy was created. In collaboration with Josh's sisters, Judith and Joan who used to work in their uncle’s batchoy restaurant in Iloilo back in the early 1980s, they would recall how the chef assembled the broth, the meat, pork cracklings and the rest of the ingredients into a bowl of round noodles.

Their new recipe was tested for a few times, ingredients’ mixtures and proportions revised, until they came up with what they feel as the original taste and presto - Superbatchoy is born!

There is distinct taste to Superbatchoy’s La Paz Batchoy that this Ilonggo’s favorite recipe would be loved as well by Manileños. It has the aroma of a rich broth but none the extra saltiness, thanks to the prodding of one partner, Paulette a Manileña, who hated the saltiness in most La Paz Batchoy she tried. In her words, their batchoy is more delectable than any type of noodle soup sold in food carts. Simply put, Superbatchoy brings a taste of home to Ilonggos in Manila, while Manileños found a new gastronomic staple in Superbatchoy.

What made Superbatchoy an instant hit is while it is flavorful and filling, it is packaged in a way that it can be on the go or eaten on site because they use paper bowls instead of a regular wash-and-dry porcelain bowls. Office workers, students, sales girls and shoppers of various backgrounds with adventurous taste would not be disappointed trying one of the country’s popular regional food.

Superbatchoy’s immediate and irresistible advantage is its affordability. While the best known La Paz batchoy restaurants sell at P70 – P100 per serving, Superbatchoy’s Special Menu only sells at P35, Super Special at P45 and their Extra Super Special sells at P55 surely prices that would make La Paz Batchoy very accessible to the masses. And there’s more! Superbatchoy serves free unlimited caldo - that hot broth ideal for soup lovers!

So, next time you crave for La Paz Batchoy, you don’t need to pay more, or to go to Iloilo for a taste of it. Superbatchoy will be gladly serving you an authentic one in Victory Pasay Mall, Pasay Public Market or LRT Baclaran. Namit Gid! (Masarap talaga!)
