Special Education Department
We adhere to the fact that there are different types of students with different needs. Thus, the school also caters to children with exceptionalities. We help children who are diagnosed with Developmental Learning Delays and also their parents to prepare for the more challenging quest for knowledge and development through our Early Intervention Program. The program is designed through a comprehensive assessment by a team of experts.

An Individualized Educational Program (IEP), which is designed through a comprehensive assessment of the child by a team of experts, is focally implemented by Happy Tykes SPED specialists using an integrative and transdisciplinary team approach.

The transdisciplinary model in Happy Tykes SPED promotes integration of the expertise of the team members so that more efficient and comprehensive assessment and intervention is provided.

Services

1. Early Intervention Program

The SPED program subscribes to a three-level intervention schedule which targets specific growth areas in a progressive approach. Each level is strictly supervised to make assessments accurate and to make sure the focus areas for particular students are completely directed.

2. Developmentally Approriate Curriculum

The SPED program takes into account the physical, social, intellectual and emotional aspects of an exceptional student’s growth. This philosophy is carried on in a curriculum that is channeled by specific and suitable guidelines.

Developmental appropriateness is applied in two parts.

1. Age Appropriateness, the ‘universal’ and predefined progressions of growth observed in children as they reach certain determined stages.

2. Individual Appropriateness, the distinct growth progression of each child characterized by exclusive growth rate, learning style, unique personality and individual relational experiences.

3. One-on-one and group sessions

Based on the development requirements of each SPED student, activities and exercises is conducted either individually or in a group setting as deemed appropriate by consultative recommendations.

4. Deaf classes

Special children with hearing imparities are not only taught the essential academic and practical knowledge but are also shaped to be optimists with the right attitude and the right level of self-esteem. Disabilities are addressed through equipping SPED students sufficient communication faculties to be able to express themselves easily.

5. Rehabilitation:

Happy Tykes also offers expert therapy sessions on the following.

a. Occupational Therapy

A registered pediatric occupational therapist conducts and assesses direct observation, formal and informal test to design an individualized sensory diet necessary in addressing sensorimotor needs of an exceptional child. To further develop the necessary age appropriate self-care skills, gross motor, fine motor and social skills of SPED students, our OT also collaborates and discusses effective behavioral managements in sublimating and turning inappropriate aggressive problem behaviors into socially acceptable ones.
