The West Melton Volunteer Rural Fire Force (WMVRFF) is a rural fire force funded and managed by the Selwyn District Council. We are not part of the NZ Fire Service but are governed by some of the same legislation. We are based on Weedons Ross Road next to the BP. We were first established in 1964. We have currently 15 dedicated and passionate firefighters. We attend 60-80 calls a year and are a valued SDC resource, attending fires all over the Selwyn area if required. We are currently fully staffed and are not recruiting, but welcome any questions on fire status, fire behaviour, basically anything to do with flame you will get our interest! We're also available on request for social events, and are happy to attend school or club events to promote fire safety or just to let the kids ride in a fire engine when we can. As a rural fire force we don't do extrication (jaws of life) or BA (breathing apparatus) but we specialise in controlling running vegetation fires of all types. We carry a range of pumps, hose and equipment to effectively achieve this.
