TSBT is a non-profit organisation thats aims to develop community supported environmental restoration education and awareness.
Made up of trustee members, keen volunteers and community people who live mainly in the Tomahawk/Smaills Beach areas, as well as people from across Dunedin who appreciate these two beaches.
TSBT started in 2000 with the aim of replenishing our local environment in the Tomahawk/Smaills area. replanting, dune stabilisation and catchment care are key areas of focus.
Since this time the trust has been active with dune clean ups, planting days, building a nursery and various community initiatives through liasion with key organisations such as Dunedin City Council (DCC), Otago Regional Council (ORC), Otago Peninsula Community Board, Department of Conservation (DoC), other coastal & community groups.
Beachcare Nursery:
Tomahawk Smaills Beachcare Nursery is the hub of the Beachcare Trust. Completed in July 2007 the nursery is now in full production. Thousands of eco-sourced (locally occurring seed collection) native plants from the nursery have already been planted in the dunes. the nursery produces around 4000-5000 natives per year.
