Napier is located in Hawke's Bay on the eastern coast of New Zealand's North Island. With a population of 58,800, Napier is best-known known for its stunning 1930s Art Deco architecture, breathtaking coastline and fantastic weather. Much of the inner city was destroyed following a devastating earthquake and fire in 1931. Each February, thousands of visitors come to Napier to take part in Art Deco weekend.
Napier's famous Marine Parade is a favourite destination for families, tourists and cyclists. With views out to Cape Kidnapper's, the Parade has recently been enhanced by the creation of extensive cycle trails, a large children's playground and a junior bike track. A new skate park is also currently under development along the parade.
Napier is home to the National Aquarium of New Zealand at the southern end of the Parade. Boarded by landscaped gardens and picnic areas, the aquarium recently added Penguin Cove and a Kiwi House.
Lovely gardens continue the picture north till you reach the Napier i-SITE. A little north is the Soundshell, built in 1935 after the 1931 earthquake and used for outdoor events and celebrations. Over the road is the cultural precinct of Napier, including the newly opened MTG Hawke’s Bay – Museum, Theatre, Gallery, the Art Deco Centre and Masonic Hotel - all steeped in history with many stories to tell. Also, the specially-designed Napier Art Deco buses offer a hop-on / hop-off service to tourists and locals alike linking this wealth of attractions, scenery and history together.
