The Matahiwi Gallery has a long History that goes back to the 1900s.
Originally it started off as a school located at Paranui (20mins past Pipiriki via jet boat, just before the Bridge to Nowhere) the school closed in Paranui area in 1942 which was later transported down the river to Matahiwi to become the local learning centre for the community.
Many years later Matahiwi school closed down between 1980-1981 and re-opened in 1983 as a kohanga Reo, the building was re-named Wainui a Rua kohanga reo, the kohanga reo was a great way for the Kuia and Koro to share their wisdom and teach the children the language and traditions that were to be upheld.
The kohanga reo later closed down and the learning centre moved to Ngati Ruaka ( Ranana ). Te wainua a rua kohanga reo was left empty and isolated.
It was an untouched building until it was re-opened in 2009. The building has been restored and is now known as the Matahiwi Gallery / Cafe, it is a stop for tourist and community to view the Arts and Crafts, info centre, history of the area, enjoy a cuppa etc those seeking a break from their long travels and locals to catchup and panui events.
