I am interested in the state of consumerism within the western world.
It’s about drawing attention to such follies of our society, thus raising the question; ‘why are we constantly striving for something new & not using up what we already have’?
I try to create an experience, both for the viewer and myself, transforming the
perception of what a material is for, playing with the tension of how it has been
altered, seizing the opportunity to change its relevance. Society’s cast offs are made beautiful through alliteration of form.
Key concerns within my practice are reorganization & transformation of material. Making unusual & aesthetically pleasing objects from off cuts & wastes primarily from wood. Changing the preconceived notions of these scraps by utilizing tools & machinery to generate new forms.
I’ve grown a fascination with using things up & find myself viewing material in a new light with an abundant potential.
A great amount of satisfaction is gained from making use of a material, extending its life, sometimes changing its purpose.
In a world where choice is paramount the limitation of using what is cheap, readily available & sustainable is liberating. Finding use where it is not necessarily obvious. A use, in the considered useless.
