We specialise in making and installing double glazed timber windows and doors. We can replace old, single glazed and rotten windows and frames with custom built, high spec double glazed units made from sustainable timber.

Isn't it cheaper to retrofit double glazing to my windows?

Retrofit double glazing is becoming common in New Zealand, but single glazed sashes were never designed to have double glazed units fitted to them. There are just so many reasons why this practice is not a good idea. For example:

A double glazed unit is nearly three times as heavy as a single glazed unit (double glazing is made up of two panes a minimum of 4mm thick; old single glazing is only 3 mm thick). Routing out an old sash to hold a double glazing unit weakens the tenon joint at the same time as you ask it to take and increase of almost three times the weight. Sagging and poor-fitting windows are likely to be the result.

In addition, the old sashes are simply screwed back using the existing screw holes. If that sash didn't fit properly when taken out, it won't fit properly when put back in.

Replacement joinery addresses these concerns, and many more, providing an alternative and fundamentally superior option for informed homeowners.

I invite you to contact me to discuss your needs and I can provide an estimate for your house. You might be surprised to find that doing the job properly, using optimal, high-spec argon filled double glazed units, and fitting compressible seals for weather tightness is around the same or sometimes a little more than a bodgy retro-fit.
