NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies 3.87

The NIOD is an open and stimulating centre of knowledge and information about war, the Holocaust and genocide. Issues concerning war-related violence raise a lot of interest in society at large and demand independent scholarly research. The NIOD conducts and stimulates this kind of research and makes its collections available to all interested parties.

The field of the NIOD covers the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The central question is what effect wars, the Holocaust and genocide have on the individual and society. Initially the focus was on the history of the Second World War in the Netherlands and the former Dutch East-Indies. Today the Second World War is placed in a broader international context.

Het NIOD is een open en stimulerend centrum van kennis en informatie over oorlog, de Holocaust en genocide. Kwesties die met oorlogsgeweld te maken hebben, wekken veel maatschappelijke belangstelling en vragen om onafhankelijk wetenschappelijk onderzoek. Het NIOD verricht en stimuleert dergelijk onderzoek en stelt zijn collecties open voor alle belangstellenden.

Het werkterrein van het NIOD bestrijkt de twintigste en eenentwintigste eeuw. Centraal staat de vraag naar de uitwerking van oorlogen, de Holocaust en andere genociden op individu en samenleving. Aanvankelijk richtte het NIOD zich op de geschiedenis van de Tweede Wereldoorlog in Nederland en voormalig Nederlands-Indië. Tegenwoordig wordt de Tweede Wereldoorlog in een brede internationale context geplaatst.
