Natalie Ypma is a Dutch contemporary artist who specializes in painting and drawings. In her work she visualizes certain conflicts in her being, like her mixed origin. Her mother was born and partly raised in the Dutch East Indies. Her family's past and often harsh experiences during the war have had a huge effect on how Natalie experiences and observes her own life. Besides that, she developed a deep and passionate affection for Indonesia.
Therefore her work shows emotional confusion, pain and sadness next to beautiful elements (of Indonesia), sensuality and serenity. She uses a strong and confronting symbolism that often leeds to a confusing and uncomfortable feeling, causing the viewer to think more deeply about what he's really observing.
