Himeji is a coastal city located in Hyogo prefecture, in the Kansai region of Japan. The world heritage site 姫路城 (Himeji-jō), also known as 白鷺城 (shirasagi-jō) or White Heron (Egret) Castle, is located in this city. Known as one of the most well preserved original castles in Japan, its recent renovation--in addition to its size and elegant design--makes Himeji Castle a must-see during your visit in Mount Shosha and Engyōji Temple, along with many events and festivals, such as the yearly Nada Kenka Festival and Moon Viewing Festival. Complete with onsen (hot springs), quaint hilltop restaurants, a traditional Japanese garden (Kōkoen), and a shopping district, Himeji is a great place to experience Japan for both the conveniences of a city and the breathtaking views the country is known for.
