Odalguri is a town and the headquarters of Udalguri district under the jurisdiction of Bodoland Territorial Council which controls the Bodoland Territorial Area Districts in the state of Assam. It is also the largest town in the district, with an area of 4.69 km2. (the second being Tangla town, area 3.10 km2.). The length of the town is approximately 3.00 km and breadth is 1.6 km. It is divided into six wards. Udalguri Town has population of 15,279 of which 7,712 are males while 7,567 are females as per report released by Census India 2011.Population of Children with age of 0-6 is 1471 which is 9.63% of total population of Udalguri (TC). In Udalguri Town, Female Sex Ratio is of 981 against state average of 958. Moreover Child Sex Ratio in Udalguri is around 961 compared to Assam state average of 962. Literacy rate of Udalguri city is 88.33% higher than state average of 72.19%. In Udalguri, Male literacy is around 92.49% while female literacy rate is 84.09%.Udalguri Town is under the administration of Udalguri Town Committee which has total administration of over 3,354 houses to which it supplies basic amenities like water and sewerage. It is also authorized to build roads within Town Committee limits and impose taxes on properties coming under its jurisdiction.It has had a small increase of population of only about 2.5% in the last 10 years. Earlier, Udalguri was a sub-divisional headquarter of the then undivided Darrang District. But after signing of Bodo Accord, An Autonomous District called Bodoland Territorial Autonomous District (BTAD) was created and Odalguri district became one of the four Districts under BTAD. Odalguri became the district headquarter when the new district was inaugurated on June 14, 2004.
