The life and teachings of Sree Narayana Guru, in whose name this Sivagiri Sree Narayana Medical Mission Hospital Varkala is founded, have been the greatest single force that has influenced the social, cultural and religious life in this part of the country. In fact, his life story is the record of the emergence of millions of backward and downtrodden people from a life degradation and explanation to one dignity and self- reliance. 83 years have passed since the Guru attained Maha Samadhi, but the light that he has kindled shines brighter as the years go by, illuminating wider and wider regions kept in the dark for ages by man's ingenuity.

Education and medical aid have always figured prominently in the scheme of things envisaged by Sree Narayana. Lack of facilities for both, especially in the rural areas of the country, has contributed much to miseries of common folk. Drawing inspiration from the teachings of the Guru, helped and guided by the Sivagiri Mutt, his disciples and followers have established a number of institutions in and around the state catering to the educational and medical needs of the public. This hospital with its adjuncts is one among them under the direct control of the Sree Narayana Dharma Sanghom Trust.

The idea of starting a hospital under the auspices of Sivagiri Mutt had its own origin in Sree Narayana Guru himself and it is said that when a land on which the hospital now stands was acquired by the Mutt ago, the Guru himself had earmarked it for this purpose. But, consequent on the Guru's attaining Samadhi not long after, the project had to lie over for a number of years. The first step implementing the idea was however, taken on 12-2-1951, when the Sree Narayana Dharma Sanghom, at its meeting, resolved that a Medical Mission be founded in the name of Sree Narayana Guru and that Travancore Devaswom board be requested to sanction a liberal grant for the construction of a ward, and its equipment.

Dr.P.N Narayanan was the Medical Supt of the Hospital,since its inception in 1954 and he passed away on 1-9-1974 .To commemorate his death anniversary september 1 every year has been observing as Dr.P.N.Narayanan's day.all members of the staff will assemble in front of the Hospital at 9.00 a.m on the day and observe silent prayer. noon meals will be served on all members of the staff,patients and bystanders on that day.

It has now become a Super Speciality Hospital in a seven storied building with almost all departments equipped with most modern equipment having well experienced and dedicated medical and paramedical personnel.

A Nursing school and Nursing College imparting instructions in ANM, GNM, BSC and Post Basic BSc, MSc Courses in all specialities are also running successfully under the Medical Mission.
