Signature Bridge Delhi at Yamuna River Wazirabad in North East Delhi 5.86

NEW DELHI: Signature bridge in Delhi: After a long time wait finally the signature bridge in Delhi has been sanctioned for the development of Yamuna Bank as a tourist spot of Delhi. Delhi Urban Development Minister A.K. Walia along with Education and Tourism Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely on Thursday announced that 200 acres along the Eastern Yamuna bank would be used for construction of a water sports, recreational centre, and a tourism park adjacent the Signature Bridge site at Wazirabad in East Delhi. India’s first “Signature Bridge” being constructed across the Yamuna at Wazirabad promises to be a great attraction of Delhi. An ambitious project of the Delhi tourism at an approximate cost of 459, the cable-stayed bridge will link National Highway number one near existing T-point at Wazirabad on Western bank and Marginal Bund Road at Khajuri Khas on eastern bank of the river Yamuna, thus connecting North Delhi with East Delhi.

With a length of about 575 meters and a height of 175 meters the proposed Signature Bridge would have a bow-shaped pylon in the middle.

Two high towers will be there to provide double cable support in the inner periphery of the carriageway. Plans are also afoot to construct a pedestrian sub-way at an approximate cost of Rs 29 lakh.

Equipped with four lanes, this engineering masterpiece will have 1.2 meter wide central verge, space for anchoring cables, maintenance walkway and crash barrier on either side of the central verge.

The deck will be composite (steel and concrete) while pylon will be in steel.

Schlaich Bergermann and Partner of Germany have been appointed as consultants for designing the bridge while M/s Systra SA of France has been appointed as Proof Consultant.


Once operational the Signature Bridge will dramatically improve access between North and west Delhi for the commuters, who have to pass through the narrow lane on the present bridge in Wazirabad, leading to heavy traffic jam in the peak hours. Also, to facilitate the movement of vehicular traffic new express lanes will be constructed to connect Ring Road with the bridge


This new symbol of Delhi is expected to be completed by May 2010. A tourism and recreation project has also been planned on 1,000 acres of land alongside the bridge. A water body is also being developed around this bridge for water-sports enthusiast. Utmost care has been taken to maintain the ecological balance of the area. Apart from that, a theme park for children will also be constructed. The top of the towers will be equipped with platforms for restaurants and other entertainment facilities. People would be ferried up and down in bubble lifts and on the way they could have incredible view of the city and this milestone bridge would be illuminated in such a manner that it could be seen from a long distance at night.
