Musuguntha Nadu had abundant greenish lands filled with water flowing from the Cauvery river and its tributaries ruled by Cholas.

All we know that The dynasty of Cholas made the Shiva worshipping and saiva hindu traditions flourish in Tamil lands for centuries.

History of Musuguntha vellalars

The history of musuguntha vellalars who used to be agricultural experts and culturally rich core hindu caste of Tamil Nadu is traced from the period of chola rule .

The King of Chola Kingdom called Musuguntha chakravarthy was the person behind the settlement of these people in the cauvery delta region of pattukkottai in Thanjavur disrtict.

Musuguntha was a chola ruler , ruled the chola kingdom from Tiruvaarur in 7th or 8th century AD. There had been a big temple of importance called 'Musukuntha Vinnagaram' in chola country .
Even though he possessed all what he wished in his life ( he possessed the shiva Linga worshipped by Brahma and Indra ) the King Musuguntha was not happy for one reason. It was due to an uncurable skin disease from which he was suffering.

He worshipped the God Shiva by visiting all the important holy temples and bathing in all holy waters in the country to get his skin disease cured.

While he was in this journey, he along with his ministers and friends was taking rest near a pond in a village called ‘musiri’. His dog which was also suffering from the skin disease casually took a swim in that pond. No one gave much attention to this.

The next day the King and his colleagues noticed that the dog had its skin disease cured and were surprised. Then the King Musuguntha wondered at Lord Shiva’s grace and went to the pond and took bath in that pond. Then his skin disease was cured and he was relieved from it .

The King Musuguntha was so happy and believed that he was cured from the disease by his sincere devotion to Lord Shiva and so he built a temple dedicated to the Lord ‘Kailasanatha’ near the holy pond.

Then he created 32 villages around the temple and donated lands to the temple for its maintenance. Then he invited his people from other part of his country to settle in this region which was later called ‘Musuguntha nadu’.
