What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic debilitating disease threatening to become a major global health burden. High, uncontrolled blood sugar levels arising either due to genetic predisposition resulting in total loss of Insulin synthesis (Type 1 Diabetes) or due to defective release and/or ineffective use of secreted Insulin (Type 2 Diabetes) is the root problem of the disease. Insulin-responsive organs like liver, adipose tissue, skeletal muscles develop Insulin resistance and function inadequately. Obesity, change in lifestyle and diet, and prolonged stress are few risk factors of Diabetes.

What happens to Diabetic patients?

Left untreated, Diabetes can impact cellular metabolism in the liver, leading to poor energy utilization and manifestation of severe co-morbid conditions affecting the eyes (retinopathy), nerves (neuropathy), kidneys (nephropathy), heart (cardiomyopathy), blood vessels and nerve damage to feet resulting in foot ulcers. What is the Artificial Pancreas Treatment?

Introduced for the first time in India, the Artificial Pancreas Treatment (APT), a US-FDA approved method of pulsatile intravenous Insulin delivery, mimics the healthy pancreas and activates the liver to efficiently metabolize carbohydrates, thereby providing the required cellular energy to drive all body functions. Not only does APT lower blood sugar levels, it also reduces severities of diabetic neuropathy, nephropathy, retinopathy and promotes significant wound healing in foot ulcers.

How does it work?

The standard insulin pen/injections many diabetics use today have limitations in achieving Insulin bioavailability because insulin is delivered under the skin and by the time it reaches the liver, any pulse is sufficiently blunted. Thus, the required insulin concentrations and oscillation thresholds are not achieved. Many of the required metabolic enzymes are hence not produced sufficiently in the liver.

With APT treatment, a uniquely-designed pump mimics the healthy pancreas and sends Insulin pulses to the liver within 4 seconds to produce at least 33 different enzymes required by cells to metabolize carbohydrates and provide the cellular energy as adenosine triphosphate (ATP) which is essential for all physiological functions of a cell.
