The school was founded by Mr. and Mrs. Broughton in Kolkata and is affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (ICSE), New Delhi. Earlier it was also affiliated to the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (Madhyamik). The medium of instruction is English. Bengali and Hindi are the vernacular subjects.
The school has four branches. Earlier there was a branch in Townsend Road, but it was closed down in the 1990s amidst much controversy. The four branches are in Kolkata (Elgin Road), Ganganagar, Kalyani and a more recent branch in Howrah.
The school anthem is 'Julien Day School's children are we' set to the tune of the national anthem of Germany. The badge of the school bears a quote of Sir Francis Bacon 'Knowledge is power
