Established in 1984,the Institute of Health Management Research (IIHMR), Jaipur is a premier, perhaps a unique organization, in the country engaged in health management research, education and training. It’s an institution dedicated to the improvement in standards of health through better management of health care and related programmes. It has emerged globally as a unique model of an autonomous non-profit and self financed
Organization that is focused on a social sector, such as health, through research and education. The Institute is designated as a WHO Collaborating Center for District Health Systems based on Primary Health Care, for its significant contribution in the area of health care management research, capacity building and education in India and abroad. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India has also identified the Institute as Institute of Excellence for training and capacity building.

Over the years the institute has significantly expanded and has successfully established two new campuses, at Delhi and Bangalore. These campuses are fully functional.

Down the memory lane, IIHMR introduced the nation's first AICTE approved and accredited postgraduate diploma in hospital and health management, that became the top ranking program in the country. This was the first ever program that recognized that non-medical graduates can be developed into professional hospital and health managers. The program has set high standards of management education in the health sector and has been recognized by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi as equivalent to MBA degree. The institute has created a critical mass of professional managers in the health sector to manage hospitals and health care organizations. The students are serving and providing their inputs to various organizations like NRHM, NACO, UN development partners, Private Corporate Hospitals etc.

IIHMR is a constantly growing organization, few years back it has added two-year fulltime program in Pharmaceutical Management to develop professionals with comprehensive management and leadership skills along with technical competencies relevant to the pharmaceutical industry. And recently, School of Rural Management has been introduced to address the needs of the development sectors. Recently IIHMR has introduced AICTE approved Fellow Programme in Health and Hospital (FPM), a unique and first of its kind Doctoral level programme. This year The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (USA), the global leader in public health research, education and training, and Institute of Health Management Research (India), the leading health management research institute in South East Asia, have crafted a new collaborative MPH program to address the educational and training needs in the emerging public health paradigm in India. The Programme has been approved by AICTE, This is a major milestone in the annals of IIHMR.

The Institute has conducted several research studies both at National and International level that have high relevance to health policies and programmes.

The Institute has made forays into the international arena. In collaboration with the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, the Institute continues to provide technical support to the Ministry of Public Health, Afghanistan for developing a monitoring and evaluation system. Similarly a health systems project, supported by DFID, UK with partner institutions in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, China, Nigeria, and Uganda has been initiated. The Institute signed MOU with Mahidol University, Bangkok, among other universities in South-East Asia, for collaborative research and student and faculty exchange in order to build capacity, especially in Public Health and Management. The Institute is active partner in developing the South-East Asia Public Health Education Institutions Network (SEAPHEIN) supported by WHOSEARO. IIHMR has also been functional as Secretariat for India Public Health Education Institutions Network to promote network among Public Health Education Institutions in India.

Besides this the Institute, through its Management Development Programmes (MDP), continues to focus on capacity building of Professionals in healthcare management at National and International level. The institute is conducting various training programmes to develop managerial and leadership competencies of national and international health professionals and programme managers. The participants are from various states in India as well as from South East Asia Region. The institute also conducts training programmes off campus and tailor made as per clients need. The major sponsors for our training programme includes WHO, World Bank, UNFPA, UNICEF, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Government of India, National Rural Health Mission, SAARC Tuberculosis Center, Nepal and other development partners. The Institute, through MDP, continued to focus on capacity building in healthcare management of national, state and district level managers of the projects funded by development agencies for the developing countries. governmental organizations. All these activities indicate that IIHMR has kept innovating and reinventing in teaching, training and research.
