Shrimanta Shankar Academy (SSA), a society engaged in spreading the teachings of Shrimanta Shankar Dev, the great saint of medieval Assam has been formed in 1992 and has its registered office at Dr. J.C. Das Road, Panbazar, Guwahati - 781001 (Assam). Since its inception, the society has been engaged in establishing educational institutes. As its first venture, the society has established "Shrimanta Shankar Academy" at Panbazar, Guwahati that happens to be the First Junior College in Assam. The results of this Institute, affiliated to Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) have been extraordinary. This prompted the society to open a Higher Secondary School at Dispur, Guwahati under the affiliation of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in 1995. This institute is catering to the growing need of good schools in the city.

The Indian Pharmaceutical Industry has made a considerable progress in infrastructure built-up and research and development. The industry produces drug over a wide range belonging to all major therapeutic groups. There is a tremendous scope for increasing the volume of exports. Well-trained and motivated pharmaceutical graduates are sought after by these industries. Pharmacy graduates are well placed in many sectors such as research and development, bulk productions, formulations, marketing, hospitals and teaching. Besides, in the last two decades, because of limited technical education facilities within the state of Assam, hundreds of students have been leaving the state in search of colleges offering quality technical education, leading to a significant amount of capital drain out of the State. Observing the huge gap in need and facilities, SSA has taken a bold step to establish a college of Pharmaceutical Science in 2007 under the name & style of "Girijananda Chowdhury Institute of Pharmaceutical Science (G.I.P.S.)". The college is established with permission from the State Govt. It is also approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi
