History:
The City College of Commerce & Business Administration is an undergraduate commerce college in Kolkata, India. It is affiliated with the University of Calcutta. It was established in 1961.

The importance of City College as one of the premier educational institutions of India rests as much in its trail-blazing efforts in the realm of education as in its association with the liberal masterminds of the 19th century Indian Renaissance. The present-day City College started as City School, founded on January 6, 1879, by the Sadharan Brahmo Samaj. It was raised to a college in 1881. B.A. classes were introduced in 1884; a Law Department came up in 1885, and M.A. classes were introduced and conducted until the new regulations of Calcutta University terminated them.

Initially the college was housed in an old building, but afterwards it was shifted to another old house at 13, Mirzapur Street (now Surya Sen Street). A new building was erected in its place, the opening ceremony of which was performed in 1884 by Lord Ripon, the then Governor-General of India. In 1905, the college was brought under the control of a society called 'The City College Institution', now known as the 'Brahmo Samaj Education Society' whose chief objective was to promote the cause of education as an all-enveloping process to contribute towards the all-round development and well-being of the human community

The City College Commerce Department came up in 1939 (18.07.1939.) in response to the large-scale demand among the youth of the time for quality university education in commerce. In 1940, a Commercial Bureau was set up; and in 1945, the Department of Commerce and Business Administration was formally organized. The college got affiliated to the University of Calcutta in 1961, and was also officially recognized by University Grants' Commission in the same year under the U.G.C. Act [Section 2(f)].

The college has achieved a respectable position among educational institutions of the highest quality. The evaluation made by India Today (according to which the college ranked 3rd in the list of commerce colleges in Calcutta and 37th on an all-India basis).

Purpose And Goal:
In spite of its rich educational heritage, the college does not intend to sit on the past laurels. Keeping in view the ever-increasing academic demands and the soaring academic level achieved by institutions the world over; the college seeks to keep an open eye to the global market. Without sacrificing the values that have made the college what it is today, the institution is making all the efforts to stride along with time. In view of this, the college intends to make education more student-friendly by generating more resources and taking the students beyond the rigid pages of the prescribed syllabus. A thorough perception of the world outside and living up to the challenges lying there must be the true intent of any student. The college has set the goal for making its students equal to the task.

Courses Offered:
City College of Commerce & Business Administration affiliated to the University of Calcutta at the undergraduate level. A college dedicated exclusively to commerce-oriented studies, it neither has the scope nor the required space to include disciplines other than commerce. The commerce department is rich and has an exclusive collection of teachers from different realms of commerce education to cater to the academic needs of students in areas, which are varied and different in approach and thrust. The Academic Faculties include Chartered and Cost Accountants, Lawyers and Officers from some high-profile business houses, who contribute in a big way to the academic excellence of the institution. The major course offered to the students is Honours in Accountancy (encompassing a wide area of subjects, as prescribed by Calcutta University). General papers are however, offered to those who choose not to pursue the Honours course with a view to going for other related areas of study in future. Apart from this, there are the departments of Economics, Mathematics and Law along with the usual language departments like Bengali, Hindi and English. Corresponding to the overhauling of the Commerce syllabus, recently done by Calcutta University, the college has taken the required steps to conduct classes in the best ways possible. Introduction of some new and resourceful courses is on the anvil.
