The college was established in 1946 while free India was born in 1947 that is the College is one year older to independent India. Coincidentally, in 2006-07, the college celebrated its diamond jubilee and then, one year later India celebrated 60 years of independence. Upon India's independence, on 15th August 1947, the new congress lead government invited Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkarji to serve as the first law minister and he was appointed as Chairperson of the Constitution Drafting Committee, to write free India's new constitution. In this Committee, Kulapati Dr. K.M. Munshiji, founder president of the college worked as a close associate of Dr. Ambedkarji. Both the legendary personalities have presented one of the best constitutions, and designed a strategy when the need was felt to introduce reservation as a means for bringing the underprivileged members of the society at par with others in free India. The constitutional framework for safeguarding the interest of the underprivileged section provided a three pronged strategy: Protective Arrangement, Compensatory Discrimination and setting up national Commission.
Bhavan's College is a part of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. The college is built upon 45 acres of land and has huge volleyball and basketball courts and also a botanical garden. The Nature club and Amateur Radio club are very popular. The college festival is named O2 and the streams offered here are Arts, Science, Commerce, Information Technology, Computer Science, Biotechnology, Management Studies and Mass Media.
